Social Communication Group
The goal of the program is provide a program model that helps children move through one developmental stage to the next. This program promotes cooperative movement by providing a structured play based environment where licensed and professional staff develop activities that are specific to the child’s speech and language, social emotional, and behavior goals. One of the primary program goals and reasons for the parent participation requirement is to empower the parent through active participation and education to help their child grow in a variety of language specific areas. The program model is one that strongly encourages active participation so that the parent can follow through with the activities provided during group and be their child’s best advocate and teacher away from the program structure.
"Kids Talk " is a social communication group designed to help young children build skills that will help them form relationships throughout their lives. Research shows one of the best ways to build speech and social skills in toddlers is through play. Licensed and professional staff provide weekly lesson plans centered around themes such as colors, numbers, animals, and body awareness (to name a few) that support toddlers early language goals as well as promote their social skills.
Several different activities are presented throughout each session and range from individually completed activities to total group activities. Music and dance, interactive books, games, puzzles, and tactile activities are each a regular presence in "Kids Talk".
Since the average ability of a toddler to focus is relatively short, we mix up gross motor activities such as dancing or pretend play as animals with fine motor activities like sitting and attending to speech sound imitation games.
We highlight each student’s successes throughout each group to build joint attention, or the ability to share focus on a single concept. Through positive reinforcement, we build each child’s vocabulary at a rate they’re comfortable with.
For our friends who aren’t quite ready to shout it out just yet, we provide an outlet for language by teaching basic sign language and reinforcing it throughout each group.
Parent participation is a crucial element to our social group as a child’s first and greatest teacher is their parent. They are the best way to facilitate their child’s comfort and compliance in the program and can use the skills they learn with us to enhance development elsewhere.
Our hope is for parents to take the models they receive from therapists in our program and are able to transfer them to activities and regular life at home in order to help each child grow to the best of their abilities. When our toddlers “graduate” at the age of three, our hope is that parent and child are fully prepared for preschool!
